Screenshots and Interview from the creators of the Californication Music Video. Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Animation by Pixel Envy. 2000.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers were shot with stationary digital video/DV cameras setup at three opposing angles, running together in synch. This allowed the directors to work with the band in a natural performance atmosphere. They went through a list of actions that would capture references of each members’ character. The DV footage was then digitized onto graphics workstations and the character animators from Pixel Envy used it as a reference to animate the 3D band models. The three angles gave the ability to match real joint and limb movements to the models in all three dimensions.
